Lab work happens in two places: urgent care clinics running rapid tests and basic panels on-site, and dedicated clinical laboratories processing the full menu — from routine chemistry to molecular PCR — on a clinician's order. Knowing which tier you need saves both time and money.

Urgent care labs vs. dedicated laboratories
Urgent care clinics excel at rapid, treat-today testing: strep, flu, COVID, urinalysis, pregnancy, and basic blood work drawn on-site. Dedicated clinical laboratories and draw stations handle the deeper menu — full chemistry, hematology, endocrinology, toxicology, and molecular testing — usually with 24–48 hour turnaround, and often at lower per-test cost for routine monitoring.
Who orders the test
In Illinois, laboratory tests are performed on a licensed clinician's order — the state does not permit patient self-ordered lab testing. Bring your provider's requisition to a draw station, or let an urgent care clinician evaluate you and order the right test in the same visit. Results go back to the ordering clinician, and most labs also offer patient portals.
What it costs
