Sore Throat
Most sore throats are viral and pass with the cold that brought them. The minority that are strep need antibiotics — and the only reliable way to tell the difference is a rapid test, not symptom-guessing.
The strep-suspicion pattern
Sudden severe throat pain, fever, swollen tonsils with white patches, tender neck glands, and — tellingly — the absence of cough push toward strep, especially in school-age children. A rapid test at urgent care settles it in minutes; treating confirmed strep prevents rare but serious complications.
When it's more than a sore throat
Drooling or inability to swallow, muffled 'hot potato' voice, one-sided severe swelling, or trouble breathing suggest deeper infections that need emergency evaluation. A sore throat past a week without cold symptoms deserves a visit regardless.
