IV Fluids & Hydration
When vomiting, diarrhea, or summer heat outpace what you can drink, IV fluids restore the balance quickly. Select urgent care clinics offer IV rehydration on-site — often the difference between a one-hour visit and an ER admission.
When IV fluids are the right call
The NIH lists dark urine, dizziness, dry mouth, and reduced urination as dehydration warning signs. When oral rehydration fails — everything comes back up, or symptoms persist — clinician-administered IV fluids with anti-nausea medication typically turn the episode around within an hour.
Escalation line
Confusion, fainting, no urination for eight-plus hours, or a rigid painful abdomen move dehydration into emergency territory. Infants and elderly adults dehydrate faster and warrant a lower threshold for care.
- Confusion or fainting
- No urination for 8+ hours
- Severe abdominal pain
What it costs
IV therapy typically prices in the procedure tier — $250–$400+ with medications, still far below an ER hydration visit. See the full Illinois cost guide.
